Leaf Burrito is made in Charlotte, NC and has been approved by the City of Charlotte Solid Waste Management for curbside servicing. The city’s solid waste staff is trained on how to empty and return it to residents’ yards, just like your garbage cans. Sustain Charlotte selected Leaf Burrito as the 2017 Winner in the Waste Reduction category.
Leaf Burrito is made of customized industrial grade mesh that is incredibly strong and virtually indestructible and is built to last with heavy duty zippers and handles. It lays flat for loading, then zips closed into a burrito shape. Use all four seasons for grass clippings, hedge clippings, garden clippings, weeds, and mulch.
Mataya came up with the idea when he used a tarp (which is not an approved container) to collect a yard full of leaves. He helped the City of Charlotte Solid Waste staff dump the burrito-shaped tarp into their truck. The driver stated, “We actually prefer it this way because otherwise we have to rip open every single bag in the landfill.” This was Mataya’s aha moment.
“Plastic bags are inefficient and not sustainable. It’s time we clearly understand that community decisions we make today impact the quality of life of the next generation. California has banned plastic bags statewide because it’s the right thing to do; other cities have successfully transitioned to sustainable options. Charlotte needs to take a stand now to improve our environmental impact and beautify our streets by stopping the bags that litter our neighborhoods,” says Mataya.
