The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is seeking the community’s assistance related to the investigation of a series of events which occurred early in the morning of March 20. Specifically CMPD is interested in speaking to any witnesses who have information regarding these events:
· The robbery that took place in the 1400 block of West Trade Street on Sunday, March 20, at approximately 1a.m.
· The shooting that occurred in the 1800 block of Garibaldi Avenue involving Officer Brent Harrison and Malcolm Xavier Springs.
· The arrest of Malcolm Xavier Springs on Garibaldi Avenue.
Detectives with the CMPD returned to Garibaldi Avenue on Monday March 21, attempting to make contact with anyone who may have new information regarding the robbery, the shooting of Officer Harrison and the subsequent arrest of Mr. Springs. An Internal Affairs investigation began immediately after the shooting involving Officer Harrison and the arrest of Mr. Springs. This is standard procedure for any case in which an officer fires his service weapon or when an officer uses force to make an arrest. In an effort to preserve the trust and confidence of the community, the CMPD investigates all accusations of officer misconduct. This investigation will be no different than any other internal affairs investigation. The confidentiality of each person who calls to speak to a detective is assured.
