Keep Charlotte Beautiful (KCB), one of the nation’s first Keep America Beautiful affiliates, has selected the Madison Park Neighborhood of Southeast Charlotte for the 2011 Adopt-A-City Neighborhood Program.
Beginning in May, KCB will be working with Madison Park to improve and expand the existing rose garden on the site of the Old Pinewood Elementary School. The Madison Park community has rallied around the idea of adopting this space and making what was once a negative aspect of the community into a central gathering place with positive features that will serve the community. The proposed name for this area is Madison Central Park.
Stacy Raynor, Madison Park HOA Director, comments, “This garden is a symbol of the previous school that once stood on the site and the generation of students who attended the institution. We would like to honor these memories as the site is reborn as a park.”
At the beginning of each year, the KCB board members select a neighborhood to participate in their neighborhood adoption program through an application process. KCB works with resident volunteers to provide a community service/beautification project of the neighborhood’s choosing. There is no cost for the neighborhood to participate, however, it is necessary for neighbors to volunteer and maintain the project after completion.
Some examples of projects that were completed in past years have included: beautification of neighborhood entrances, landscaping neighborhood common area and painting a neighborhood center.
