Now that the Republican National Convention is not having its big event in Charlotte, Chief Kerr Putney announced Monday that he was officially retiring July 1.

Putney had planned to retire earlier, but stayed on to manage the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) through the RNC convention. That is now not going to happen here, freeing him to retire now.

Putney served CMPD in various roles for 30 years. He said Monday addressing the people of Charlotte, “I am humbled that you gave me this opportunity in the first place. This is the best city that I could have ever chosen to make my home and to work for this police service.”

Putney will be succeeded by Johnny Jennings, another CMPD veteran, as reported in this article on Charlotte Area News.
