The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) is graduating the largest group of women to start and complete the academy together in recent history. The seven women join 33 others who have completed rigorous training to now serve the Charlotte community.
“These women and this entire class have answered the call to serve and I am so glad they are ready to work alongside the community for a better and safer Charlotte,” said CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings. “We know that there is a lot of work to be done, and CMPD can’t do it alone. I am glad that we are able to see recruits graduate and stand with our community to work together. Welcome to the CMPD family recruit class 187.”
These officers come from various educations and career backgrounds; one officer served in emergency medical services as a first responder in Buffalo, N.Y., while another served in the U.S. Armed Forces. They come to Charlotte from places across the country, including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and some local to North Carolina.
“They’re going to push you to your limits, but they don’t want to see you fail,” said Officer Miranda Dougherty of the 187th recruit class. “There’s so much advice and help through the process that allows you to move past your fears. You don’t realize at first how much you know, but it just builds your confidence.”
“This class was the strongest overall class of females I’ve seen since I’ve been out here,” said Officer Tim Purdy of the CMPD Recruitment and Training Bureau. “They have the ability to take on the task and accomplish it. It’s important to see that we have women who are willing to step up to the plate and serve their community. These young ladies have great attitudes and will serve their community well.”
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Recruitment Division is committed to recruiting, assessing, and hiring the best-suited and qualified applicants to meet the needs of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community.
