Charlotte Regional Realtors Report Increased Sales Activity in May

Charlotte Regional Realtor® Association reports the number of closings for May 2012 (2,607) increased 19.0 percent compared to May 2011, when closings totaled 2,191. Both the average and median sales price showed positive increases for a fourth consecutive month. The average sales price in May 2012 ($217,561) was up by 4.0 percent compared to the same period last year ($209,288), and the median sales price ($165,000), the best measure of trends over a period of time, showed prices up by 8.6 percent compared to May 2011 when the median sales price was $152,000. Davidson Students Create Web Site to Shed Light on Plight of the Unemployed

It was an eye-opening spring semester for Davidson College students in Sociology 250. As part of the curriculum in the “Inequality in America” class, Assistant Professor Jessica Taft assigned her 15 students to each conduct an extensive interview with one of the 46,000 Charlotte-area people who is unemployed. After conducting and analyzing all the interviews, students compiled their observations on a public web site. Mecklenburg County and Carolinas Healthcare System Settle Lawsuit

Mecklenburg County and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Hospital Authority (DBA Carolinas HealthCare System) have settled the dispute that was the subject of a lawsuit filed by Carolinas HealthCare System on July 14, 2011. In the settlement, Mecklenburg County will transfer to Carolinas HealthCare System the Billingsley Road property currently operated as a behavioral health hospital known as CMC-Randolph, which Carolinas HealthCare System plans to continue to operate. The 66 inpatient beds at CMC-Randolph and the emergency department are licensed to Carolinas Medical Center, which is owned by Carolinas HealthCare System. Mecklenburg Commissioners Adopt $1.4 Billion Budget, Cutting Tax Rate

With no change from their straw vote decision a week ago, the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners adopted a budget for 2012-2013 on Tuesday that cuts the tax rate by 2.44 cents and provides a 3-percent raise for school employees. The $1.42 billion budget is $31.3 million more than the current year’s adopted budget. The new budget takes effect on July 1, 2012, with a new tax rate of 79.22 cents per $100 of valued property.
